I love your book reviews. I have enjoyed reading some of the ones you mentioned in past posts.

The one about the prairie blizzard sounds fascinating. I think Lois Lenski wrote about that blizzard in her book, Prairie School, which I read aloud to my sons when they were younger. My husband had heard the same thing about the settlement of the prairies (here in Canada we use that humbler term instead of "Great Plains") -- that it was a huge and costly mistake -- so I had to look up the articles by Kristof. They are waiting for me on the office printer.

Looking forward to future reviews!

I ought to be happy for you, since we really like your history books and your FLL book, not to mention WTM. However, I find myself wishing you would have written one for high school students who resist expository writing. Particuarly since my rising highschooler only likes history when you write it. Any chance you'll be doing one of those?

Off topic...

Would you ever consider allowing your books to be scanned for the amazon kindle? Our twelve year old son is dyslexic. The amazon kindle 2 with it's text to voice software, has become a valued tool in his schooling.

Nomi,

Thanks! That actually makes sense--Multnomah wasn't part of Random House when I wrote that book, and it's now out of print--after which Random House bought Multnomah.

Ah, now I see. :-)

Hi Susan,

Curious, I ran your name on Bookscan, and it looks like the culprit is a book called Through the Darkness Hide Me, Multnomah, imprint of Random House.

Computer errror can look so much weirder than human error, but there's usually a logical reason (if only an earlier error) buried in there somewhere.

Well, I don't know if it IS fair...my books seem to average around 800 pages. :-) But the History of the Ancient World is my favorite so far (to be replaced in February by the History of the Medieval World, which was even more fun).

Ha! If you're serious, give Dark Hollow a try, I guess. It's certainly my personal favorite. But turnabout is fair play. Which one of yours should I try?

Brian,

Think of the publicity! All those writers visiting your author page.

So now I have to read some of your stuff. What's your favorite of your books? Give me a recommendation.

Hi Susan,

It gets even weirder. I had the same thing happen to me last week when I set up my author page. Of the four publishers they contacted, one was a company who I've never written for. When I emailed Amazon about this, I got the same response you've reproduced above, and it was from Sujay P.

I have to wonder if Sujay is using his/her response to me as a form letter, and perhaps forgot to remove the link to my page. And if so, how many other authors have been redirected to that over the past week?

Hope they straighten it out for you. Gotta love this business sometimes, right?

Brian

PS: Thanks for not editing my account, though. ;>)

Congratulations!

If you have the time to comment, I'm extremely interested in what you mentioned about teaching writing basics to college students. You obviously don't have the time to go through a full writing program with them, so how do you condense and utilize your ideas on writing to get them up to speed and still teach the class they're getting a grade for?

Enjoy your down time =)

Oh, don't worry, no walking away here! In fact, I've already been working on the third book. But this time I'm not making any promises ahead of time about when I'll be finished. With this last book, I felt like I was always behind and running to catch up. I'm not sure that I wrote any faster or slower than if that pressure hadn't been there--I just know that it made the writing NO FUN AT ALL.

So as to when they might be ready...can I keep you posted? :-)

Congratulations, but, ahem, with The History of the Medieval World released next year, when do we expect the next two volumes (History of the Early Modern World & History of the Modern World)?

You can't just put that pen down and walk away... you've got a dedicated history reader here... ;-)

And you'd think that after 20 years of being a mom and 12 years of homeschooling, I would have a better idea of what I can and can't do. But I am constantly over-estimating as well! Hope springs eternal, I guess.

You know, I think you are one smart chick. I really admire that resolution, and the fact that you said one time that you run PHP debt-free. I think your writing and business endeavors are going to reward you and your family!

Enjoy getting into the real creative process when you get going again!

Oooh, congratulations!

That over-quiet silence you are hearing is the adrenaline and guilt slowly leaving your system. I remember it from the first day I came home from my first job out of university. After five years (more if you count high school) of constantly having something that I should have been doing, it was astonishing to be able to sit and do nothing without feeling guilty about the ten things I was ignoring.

Enjoy:)

I was going to go to the NoVa conference, but DH said I'd have to come home rather than staying over. (I wanted to stay over to digest everything in silence.)

Wound up just buying the conference CD and awaiting its arrival most anxiously.

Ah, one of my favourite writers has also commited this blunder in the past week with a classic quote on his reviewer's blog:

"I will hate you till the day I die and wish you nothing but ill will in every career move you make. I will be watching with interest and schadenfreude."
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/06/another_author_lets_loose_over.html

Coming from a philosopher of quietude and reflection this made me spray coffee at my computer screen.

But this has simply increased my respect for De Botton. Its humanity gives his work more authenticity. And, well, someone once said of him that he was incapable of writing a boring sentence. How very true.

You might like this book http://www.amazon.com/Ice-Bound-Doctors-Incredible-Survival/dp/0786866845/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246986113&sr=8-1 about a doctor's survival in Antarctica - first, how she took care of scientists/engineers/mechanics/builders there with little to no medical supplies/equipment, and second, how she GOT supplies and trained her fellow "Polies" to care for her when she found she had cancer while there, and had no hope of getting out to civilization soon. Then there is the dramatic rescue at the end.

Ironically, I watched the movie a few weeks ago, then reserved the book from the library - the day before I was to pick it up, I heard on the news that she died that day.

I appreciate David Brooks' 7/7/09 NYT op-ed "In Search of Dignity" and how it dovetails with your thoughts. Developing our children's inner moral code is one on a growing list of reasons why we're choosing to educate in classical fashion. (With a focus on systems thinking, creative expression, compassionate service, and a big world view -- there you have it, Taproot Academy’s mission statement!)

I thank you for your clarity, persistence, and humor during these morally ambiguous times for many of our elected leaders. Perhaps we’re nearing a time when the phrase “restore dignity to the office” won’t just be a campaign slogan.

Then you would like Terri Jentz's Strange Piece of Paradise. Gripping, gripping read and you know what happens right away, but you still stick with her through the entire book and can't get enough. I know I liked it because it was set in Central Oregon (where my entire family is from), but a really good memoir about facing death, survival, and healing. Her writing is incredible and she's now one of those people I plan to meet someday just so I can shake her hand.

I loved Perfect Storm, too by Junger. Incredible book.
