News About SWB

Most Recent Update!

Susan’s newest book is an updated and expanded version of her 2003 best-seller, The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had. The revised edition, published in November 2015, has new recommendations, updated edition suggestions, a much-expanded guide to watching classic play productions, and a whole new chapter on reading the classics of science in chronological order.

Bookpage says that the new edition “replicates what one should encounter (emphasis on should) at a good liberal arts college or university—a solid grounding in both classical and modern writers who have shaped Western thought….Even if you read only a fraction of the choices, The Well-Educated Mind is a welcome counterbalance to the anodyne, information-based sound bytes that assault our daily lives. Unlike that exercise machine being used as a clothes rack in your bedroom, this is a portable, flexible means to self-improvement.”

The Story of Western Science: From the Writings of Aristotle to the Big Bang Theory was published by W. W. Norton in May 2015.

The Story of Western Science tells the story of science in the words of the scientists themselves.  The Story of Western Science is a “bright, informative resource for readers seeking to understand science through the eyes of the men and women who shaped its history” (Kirkus), an “entertaining and unique synthesis [that] makes accessible the grand ideas of history’s most important scientific thinkers, as revealed in the stories behind these influential books.” (Times Higher Education).

(This book was previously published as The Story of Science,  but W. W. Norton has reprinted it with the slightly different title The Story of Western Science. Same book, though!)
